My 2 cents worth:

Zandari is a beautiful place to retreat in Costa Rica. Zandari has been built on a coffee plantation in the Central Valley above Alejala (sp?) Beautiful trails and waterfalls on the property. A tropical paradise. You are treated like a queen by the natives. Healthy food serves on the property. Fresh fruits and smoothies. Zandari was built to blend in authentically with the native surroundings. No TV's, just beauty! Spa treatments, etc.

There is much to see not far away. Live volcanoes with a resort, for instance, oh, river cruises, etc!

I haven't been yet but they built Zandari resort at the beach, too, in Costa Rica.

You want to hire a driver.

I am not much of a beach person so I loved sending time in La Fortuna, Alajuela, Costa Rica (there are two La Fortunas in costa rica). It is a small town off the beaten path. It is in the shadow of the volcano Arenal. I spent a week there reading, writing, and sitting in cafe patios just looking at the volcano.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for http://www.slothsanctuary.com/. Feeding baby sloths while having breakfast is a treat. It is just outside of Cahuita on the northern coast of the country. Again, off the beaten path. Nice place to sit and look at the ocean with out a million tourist.
